Four Trends for Green Homes in 2011

Earth Advantage Institute is based out of Portland, Oregon and has certified more than 11,000 green homes. Each year, the group compiles its annual top ten trends. These trends are based on discussions with builders, developers, architects, real estate brokers, appraisers, lenders and homeowners.  Last year, the trends focused on water conservation, the “rightsizing” of homes and “eco-districts” where people could walk or bike to most services. This year, however, the trends include increased recycling of “greywater” (waste water from sinks and tubs – but not toilets) and a greater use of smart meters and appliances that monitor their own energy usage.  The group also expects to see more accessory dwelling units or independent back yard cottages for use as rentals, studios, in-law suites or home offices.
