More and more customers are asking about eco-friendly pest control options. Many pest control companies offer environmentally friendly options in which they provide alternatives to harsh chemicals, including using natural plant-based oils as a repellent. Homeowners interested in such pest control alternatives should ask their pest control agent about the ingredients being used in their products. Eco-friendly companies use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, which are recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency. So, not only will they remove the pest in a safe manner, but also identify the reasons that caused the pest to appear in the first place. Why are (the pests) there? Where are they getting in from? What's attracting them to the house? "You always want to start with (the structure) and then also look at sanitation," . "Is there a garden that's too close to the house? Do trashcans have lids? Are there other sanitation issues that are inviting insects to come in? You also want to fill small cracks and crevices inside. Really look around kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Wherever there's food and water, that's where they're coming to."
With more eco-friendly and safer products available, costs for these products are coming down and are now comparable to traditional methods. However, homeowners need to understand that natural products take longer to work and the effectiveness diminishes more rapidly than chemical pesticides. "It's not going to kill as quickly as some of the other toxic stuff out there, but it's just as effective (long term)."
