Scotts Miracle-Gro goes 'green' by removing phosphorus from fertilizer

Fertilizer giant Scotts Miracle-Gro announced Monday it will remove phosphorus from all its U.S. lawn fertilizers by 2012 to curb pollution caused by rain washing its products into bodies of water.

Phosphorus in fertilizer is a nutrient. It is often rinsed off lawns by rains and then carried by storm water runoff to waterways where it causes pollution in the water by feeding algae. Large algae blooms block out the light needed by aquatic plants, causing them to die off, which removes oxygen from the water as the algae decomposes. That lack of oxygen in the water kills off other aquatic life and causes the water to stagnate.

In addition to removing the phosphorus from its lawn fertilizers, Scotts said it will concentrate on finding ways to make the nitrogen in its fertilizers more efficient to limit the potential for runoff problems. Scotts began lowering the phosphorus content of its fertilizers in 2006 after finding that most lawns in the U.S. could flourish without phosphorus.
