Freeze Warnings Bring Higher Wildfire Risks to Florida

Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Charles Bronson states that with the recent and upcoming freezing temperatures around the state the chances of wildfires is increasing. The statement dated December 8, 2010 attributes the wildfire risk not only to the low temperatures that create dead and dry vegetation that allow wildfires to start and burn easily, but to this year's low rainfall during hurricane season as well.

The most important thing that a Florida resident can do to help prevent the spread of wildfire is to keep their homes and land cleared and as resistant to the spread of wildfire as possible.

Charles Bronson's office suggests:

1. Roof and gutters -- should be free of all vegetation and debris.
2. Around the sides of the house -- keep the area clean and landscape the area using plants with low flammability; keep organic mulch, especially pine straw, moist.
3. Within 30 feet of the house -- keep the area mowed, watered within current local water management guidelines, and keep all debris and brush picked up.
