On Sunday, January 2, 2011, Code Green Community is hosting a neighborhood event. “It’s more than just gardening, it’s bringing people together to support a worthy cause,” claims Eric Stewart, founder of Code Green.
What is a permablitz? It’s where members of a community get together to lend a good ol’ fashioned helping hand…to provide an edible garden, create a rain water harvesting system, or work on a project that helps the neighborhood become more self-sufficient. Permablitzes are free events, open to the public, where you learn a lot, get some exercise, and have a wonderful time.
“Our goal is to have the Angelus grow their own healthy, organic food while fostering a sense of community with local residents and anyone else who would like to help out. We have 17 acres, a greenhouse, shaded gardening areas that are accessible to wheelchairs, and a fantasy forest that we would like to fill with fruits, nuts, vegetables and other edible plants,” says Joe Neri who runs The Angelus.“But we need your help. Come volunteer, or bring some plants, seeds, cuttings of edible trees or bushes, or even cardboard boxes to lay down as a weed barrier”, adds Eric.
Join them, on Sunday January 2 at the Angelus at 12413 Hudson Avenue in Hudson (weather permitting). This is the kick-off event but the gardening will continue every Saturday from 9am to 1pm for those of you who would like to continue to help.
The Angelus – is a 501(c)(3) charity and home for severely handicapped persons who are not able to care for themselves. All of the residents and students have cerebral palsy and all use wheelchairs. Some are non-verbal, some are blind, some are deaf, some are mentally retarded, some have normal intelligence, but all understand and need kindness and love. www.theangelus.com
Code Green Community – inspires, promotes, and creates resilient, sustainable, and abundant Tampa Bay communities. Our goal is to co-create a future of localized food, sustainable energy sources, and a resilient local economy with an enlivened sense of well-being and community. www.codegreencommunity.org
