Pasco firm developing alternative battery with UF
Environmentalists' dream of an all-electric car has long been hobbled by a host of problems, including cost, limited travel ranges and long charging times. But a Pasco County company thinks it may have solved those problems. Dais Analytic, a startup based at the West Pasco Industrial Park, has struck a deal with the University of Florida to create a new type of battery, one that can hold as much energy as the same volume of gasoline. In short, it could replace fossil fuels now powering cars. Under the UF deal, researchers in Gainesville will spend the next 12 months developing a prototype battery built around Dais' high-tech plastic membrane. Rather than making power, though, this new device would store energy made by other sources, be they solar cells, wind turbines or conventional power plants. An electric car powered by Dais' material could travel 300 miles on a single charge, compared with the 100-mile range of the newest electric cars.
